Our History
Our agency was organized to market
Accident and Health Insurance in 1950 by Dr. Milton Orr, Sr., in
Montevallo, AL.
It was later when Bob Broadhead teamed up with
Victor Scott to market Property, Casualty, and Life Insurance.
They formed B & S Insurance Agency.
Dr. Orr merged his agency into B& S during this
period. Mr. Broadhead's passing caused Victor Scott to search
for another partner, with an insurance background. Enter F. Reid
Long.
The name was changed to Scott-Long Insurance Agency,
Inc. They also, formed Scott-Long Realty, Inc.
With the growth coming in the northern portion of
Shelby County, a branch was opened in Alabaster. It was housed
in an old frame dwelling and situated where our current office is
located. Per Reid, "You could see day light through the
walls."
It was after this move that The Walker Insurance
Agency, owned by Harold and Francis Walker, merged in with our agency.
The operation of the insurance and realty companies
put such a demand on Vic and Reid that additional management support
was needed.
In 1974 James Garner entered the Agency as General
Manager of the insurance operation.
The Agency changed to its present name in 1978.
Vic Scott retired, due to declining health, in
1981. Following Vic's retirement, the decision was made to close
the office in Montevallo.
The First Bank of Alabaster sold Shelby Insurance
Agency to us in 1983.
Reid Long retired in 1985 to devote full time to his
Real Estate and Property development interest.
Roy Downs Insurance Agency, located in Calera, and
owned by Dee Gee Schroeder, merged with our Agency in 1996.
We have, since the beginning, represented stable,
progressive and reliable insurance companies. They agree to
provide our clients with sound protection, backed by service. As
representatives of our clients, we must make certain that they do just
that. Our business has been conducted in an honest and
professional manner. This is necessary to remain in business,
therefore, our employees are expected to conduct themselves
likewise. In order to achieve and maintain a professional
status, our employees are encouraged to take outside educational
courses.
At present, we service both commercial lines and
personal lines customers.
